Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematical ideas and practices situated in their cultural context. Culturally Situated Design Tools (CSDTs) are web‐based software applications that allow students to create simulations of cultural arts—Native American beadwork, African American cornrow hairstyles, urban graffiti, and so forth—using these underlying mathematical principles.
This chapter discusses scholarly work in the field of ethnomathematics from three perspectives that seem to encompass much of the current work in the field: challenging Eurocentrism in mathematics; ethnomathematics praxis in the curriculum; and ethnomathematics as a field of research. Ethnomathematics, as a field of inquiry, began in about 1970, although the term itself did not come into use until about 10 years later. Its basic tenet is that mathematical ideas are cultural expressions embedded within cultural contexts. The emergence or elaboration of mathematical ideas follows no necessary or universal path. It’s odd. I can’t do traditionally-creative things drunk (or much else), but my math is SO much better when I’m drunk. Even stuff like difficult take home exams I ace when I’m drunk but get Bs on sober. The school is there to teach but also judge the performance and grade it. It should be as objective as possible to provide a true outcome.
